The Philippines takes on Japan while
defending champion Iran clashes against China tonight in the semifinal round of
the 2015 FIBA Asia Cup basketball championship in China.
The Filipinos booked a seat in the
knockout final-four after dispatching a feisty Lebanon squad Thursday night,
82-70, in a game that was closer than reflected by the final score.
Gilas is favored against Japan
having beaten it in the second round, but the team under coach Tab Baldwin is
expected to continue playing hungry to make it all the way to the finals and a
shot at the gold medal.
It would be a tougher grind for
either Iran and China in the other half of the semis.
The Philippines made the foreign
coach of Lebanon eat his words that the Filipinos would be “easy, easy”
pickings for his boys as Gilas banked on the heroics of Jayson Castro, with 25
points, and Andray Blatche, with 24, to put Lebanon away.
Blatche and the spiffy Terrence
Romeo scored in a 6-0 run to give Gilas a 69-59 lead in the fourth quarter
which proved enough to stem comeback attempts by Lebanon.
