What’s
in a name? A lot, it seems. at least for congressmen pushing to rename the
North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to the President Cory C. Aquino Expressway or
CAEx in a bill already approved by the House Public Works and Highway
Committee.
Nueva
Ecija Rep. Magnolia Rosa Antonino initiated the name change for the
84-kilometer highway which was built in the 1960s as the Radial Road 8.
The
major highway linking Metro Manila to Northern Luzon has undergone a
number of prior name changes since then to the Manila North Expressway, the
Manila North Diversion Road and the present NLEx.
The
most recent name change is to “perpetuate” the memory of Aquino as an “icon of
democracy,” said its proponent.
Thus,
if your car’s GPS road navigator should fail to tell where on earth is CAEx,
just key in its old name NLEx. Or better yet, update your GPS. -end-
