Lawyer Jose Luis Martin “Chito”
Gascon is the new chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) which
will also have three new commissioners in Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana, Karen
Gomez-Dumpit and Leah Tanodra-Armamento.
President Aquino’s appointment of
Gascon, who will replace Etta Rosales whose term would end on May 5, and
those of the three new commissioners was announced by the CHR’s public
information office, according to GMA News.
Gascon has served as education
undersecretary and was the youngest member of the constitutional commission
that drafted the 1987 Constitution. He is at present a member of the Human
Rights Victims Claims Board overseeing the welfare of the victims of martial
law. He will serve up to 2022.
Pimentel-Gana is the daughter of
former Senator Aquilino Pimentel, Jr., while Dumpit previously served as
director of CHR’s government linkages office. Tanodra-Armamento led
the department’s Committee for the Special Protection of Children prior to his
