Lawyer Harry
Roque, Jr. clarified today (Sept. 17) in his column View from Malcolm that
Vice President Jejomar Binay was not booed or jeered by students of the University
of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) during a speech which the 2016 presidential
election contender delivered there.
Saying that he
was at the UPLB forum, Roque said that while it was true that some
students expressed disagreement with Binay’s view, they did
not amount to jeering.
“Yes, there
were some students outside the lecture room who gave the VP the thumbs down
when he entered the venue,” wrote Roque. “Yes, the students asked tough
questions about political dynasties, human rights and political ads.”
“But while the
response of the students indicated that they were not in accord with the VP’s
answers, it was hardly what one would call ‘jeering.’”
Roque conceded
though that the students tried to “pin down” Binay on what he has done to
promote human rights as part of the Aquino administration.
Binay
responded that he could “not address violations of political and civil rights
under the (housing) portfolio” given him by the administration, recounted the
lawyer. -end-
